A Prediction Market Participant Earned $Nearly Half a Million from Wagers on Venezuela's Political Shift.

A bettor profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro just before it was publicly declared, sparking debate about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be removed from office by the close of the month increased in the hours before Donald Trump declared on the weekend that the president had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which became a member in December and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a starting bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that users estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

But these probabilities had increased to eleven percent by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the first hours of January 3rd, pointing to a rapid movement in positions right before the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a trade based on non-public details," said a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other traders also earned significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Grows

Elected officials are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation presented on recently aims to prohibit public officials from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the United States, with users able to predict everything from sports outcomes to political events.

This sector were examined under the Biden administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Insider trading is a crime in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting space.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
