The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also asked that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

He was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was took office without issue on January 1st, 2023.
